“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”.
Lately it hasn’t felt like we have been honoring that first amendment. It recent news, we have had a mass eruption of violence from what was supposed to be a peaceful protest at University of California Berkeley to milo yiannopoulos appearance to a full fledged massacre of fist punching and fighting. This happened again at Berkeley for a March for Trump was supposed occur but was drowned out by the voices and chants of Berkeley student protests against it. Furthermore, at De Anza Community College, a staff writer for the school newspaper La Voz had to write an opinion piece on the amount of people not accepting conservatism in a “liberal” place.
Need I say more?
This is a very important amendment, if not the most important. We are lucky to live in a society in our country that allows us to speak our mind regardless to the Government’s rules. Even if we don’t see the change we want to see immediately or at all. THis amendment can bring ches within the community and if used constructive way, it can better society.
There is naturally a difference of opinion between individuals. This can create opposition between the parties and lead to just like Berkeley or even De Anza, aggression or microaggression. The first amendment should be taught and explained in a manner of respecting other’s beliefs regardless of disagreement. Debates and discussion should be the first action taken when two opinions differ. And if that isn’t the case, there should a be a time allotted for each party to take a break, remove each other from the situation for a 10 minute break and try again. But most importantly there must be an great amount of self control and respect for the person and different opinion regardless. THe conversation cannot begin if neither respects the opinion of the other. Through critical thinking, logic, reasoning and empathy, the discussion should acknowledge both agreements till compromise or mutual respect and understanding or a third part can reach upon agreement.
The one thing that the first agreement that should be changed is a clarification of all speech, press and other forms of conversation/word cannot violate basic human rights. Freedom of speech or press cannot seriously harm, disrespect a person’s dignity because of race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation identity, orientation or political preference. THere should be no need for people to be disrespect someone’s opinion because it does not agree with their own. There are other means to get your opinion heard and out.
Having the freedom of free speech is having the freedom of free will. It cannot be abused and used maliciously if nothing it come with great responsibility, It is for the measurement of social, political and economical issues and well being of society.
